Frank the Chef: How Cooking Together Taught Us More Than Just Recipes

Introduction:

Cooking with toddlers can be a wild ride, but it’s also an incredible learning opportunity. Recently, Frank and I whipped up some homemade pizzas, and in the process, I realized we were learning way more than just kitchen skills.

Story:

Frank loves food, but he loves making a mess even more. So, when I suggested we make pizzas together, he was all in. I prepped the ingredients, imagining a Pinterest-worthy cooking session, but within minutes, flour was everywhere, tomato sauce was on the floor, and Frank was proudly declaring himself “Chef Frank.”

As we worked together, I realized how much he was learning. Measuring out ingredients turned into a math lesson, while spreading sauce and arranging toppings became a creative art project. We talked about colors, textures, and flavors, and it turned into a sensory experience. Frank felt empowered, and even though the kitchen looked like a tornado hit it, he beamed with pride when his mini-pizza came out of the oven.

Takeaway:

Cooking with kids is messy, but it’s also a great way to bond and learn together. It teaches patience, creativity, and even some basic math skills. Plus, the look on Frank’s face when he ate his creation was worth every single flour spill.
